6 Things They Didn’t Tell Me About Moving To Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai Living Expounded

I love the digital nomad lifestyle. I really do. But I have to say, you never really know what living in a country will be like, until you actually move there. You can read a ton of blog posts, or watch a hundred videos; but until you live in a country for at least a month or two, you won’t know the real deal.

This is where I come in. I’m trying to show you the real picture of Chiang Mai living.

Everyone loves it here, and raves about it day in and day out. I love Chiang Mai too, but I can be a little objective about it. Like every other country in the world, it has its ups and downs. It has its pros and cons. Yin and Yang. You get the picture.

There are six main things I’ll focus on in this post. Maybe more stuff will come as I’m here longer, but for now, here are the top six things no one tells you about moving to Chiang Mai. Booya!

The Air Quality Sucks

I’m one of the lucky ones in Chiang Mai (CM). I don’t have asthma, or any brochial or respiratory problems. I’m also really fit, from years of yoga, and running. So I don’t actually notice the air quality much. I do notice a layer of grime on my body when I go home after a long day outside. The air quality bothers people and it should. That’s a lot of exhaust a lot of us are inhaling on a regular basis.

Does this mean, I’m telling people not to visit CM, because of freaking air quality? Not at all. (more…)

7 Steps To Becoming A Digital Nomad

Ad: Become Digital Nomad In Five Weeks Or Less. Requirement: Need to Give Up Old Identity

Have you ever said to yourself, ‘I want to become a digital nomad (DNs), but I don’t know where to start??’ Well, I get those kinds of questions all the time from my Instagram, Facebook, and even my blog.

I have people asking me how they can become a digital nomad. Some of them pay me for my coaching services, and others aren’t willing to do the work it akes to become one. If you want a brief glimpse into the work that it takes to become a digital nomad, then this (extremely long) blog post is for you.

Just remember, becoming a digital nomad isn’t for the faint-hearted at all. Not only do you need lots of courage to begin the process, but you also need lots of persistence and consistent effort to keep it going. I hope you have what it takes to become one of the elite travelling business people of the world. The day I could label myself ‘Digital Nomad’ was the happiest day of my life, and I know it will be the same for all of you.

So let’s get started.

STEP 1: Believe You Can Do It And Decide Where You Will Move To

The Money Will Come

Most people when they decide to become a Digital Nomad spend all of their time worrying about what job they are going to do in order to make the money to live in another country. In my opinion and real-life experience, the money will come. Once, you decide to take the leap, the money will appear. It has happened to lots of people I know who decided to pick up and leave. Why Am I Obsessed With The Digital Nomad Lifestyle?

  • Reading time:14 mins read

Why am I obsessed with the digital nomad lifestyle? Why do I want to spread it to the ends of the Earth? Why do I talk about it incessantly? These are all great questions. Valid ones, too.

Time Freedom Is True Freedom

My answer? It is because Digital Nomads (DNs) in my opinion are free in the true sense of the word. In my opinion, they are the freest of the humans out there. There aren’t any that are freer. I know people dream about becoming celebrities, or billionaires, but in my opinion, these individuals are not free. They cannot travel anywhere they want at their own whim. They might have a lot of money, but they lack time.

And my friends, time is the new hot currency.

There are millions of us, who have money, but no time. True freedom is all about time.

Retirement Is Dead

Think about the typical scenario. Most people spend decades working really hard, giving up on their hobbies, and their relationships, to make a lot of money. Hopefully after all of that effort, they have gained some form of financial independence. Sadly, most people work all of their lives, and never gain any sort of financial independence. But let’s assume in this scenario that they worked long and hard, and they see the rainbow. They have enough money to do what they want. What do most people do? They travel for a bit. They rummage around in their gardens. They write a little bit. But after a while, they wonder was this what they worked so hard for? Was this all? (more…)

8 Reasons Why I’m Such A Gypsy At Heart

  • Reading time:7 mins read

I have a gypsy heart.

I have fought with everyone around me for years now. They think the lifestyle I want – the Digital Nomad lifestyle isn’t feasible long-term. I disagree vehemently, and I have fought with not only my parents over this, but my now ex-partners, friends, and random strangers on the street.

That’s the sad thing to me. I never argue with them over their choices, but people always seem to want to argue with me over my choices. That irks me. It really really irks me.

Everyone Wants To Argue With Me

Why is everyone so against what I want to do with my life? Why are they so willing to argue with me over it? What is this need they have to argue with me over the choices that I have undertaken, when I am not asking them for any feedback or recommendations or suggestions.

Obviously, all of this aggression against my choices made me wonder why is everyone so against me? I truly want to find out if I was making wrong choices, or were people just randomly against me because I was making them feel that their life choices were wrong and they were trying to bring me down. 5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Be A Digital Nomad (It’s Not All Roses)

  • Reading time:8 mins read

Whenever I see posts on becoming a digital nomad, they are all about the glories of it. I have to say, I absolutely love owning my own online business, and working from anywhere in the world. It is glorious. As glorious as can be.

Not All Roses

But I want to warn people that it is definitely not all a bed of roses, and I would warn you that if you are planning to take this task on, that you should be really careful of the pitfalls of being a digital nomad. I don’t even say this as a tongue-in-cheek thing.

I really believe these five reasons are important to keep in mind when you first plan to start on your own glorious journey as a digital nomad. It’s about seeing both sides of the coin as much as possible. Nothing is all good or all bad. Let’s be Zen-like about it, and tell the world what the true story is all about. That’s what I want to do for you – pull back the curtains so you can see what it’s all really like.

You Will Miss Your Family Like Crazy

Thank the Lord for Facetime and Skype, because without it, I would miss my family back home like insanity. Spending a few minutes every few days talking to them face-to-face really does help. If you are not close to your family, then this won’t be an issue for you. But I am extremely close to my family. I love my sister and brother like crazy and I miss giving them a hug or even just being close to their smiles. I miss my mother’s home-cooked meals, and I miss my Dad’s sense of humour. (more…)

[Ep 18] World-Travelling Ukulele Player Shares How She Lives And Works

  • Reading time:3 mins read

In this episode, I had the great pleasure of chatting with another amazing influencer, Brooke Palmer. I met Brooke years ago online when she read one of my posts about living a real life on my other blog, BrownVagabonder. She messaged me and we started a conversation and an online friendship that has lasted years now.

I love the internet for this exact reason. You might not believe it but I have never met Brooke face-to-face, but we are still friends in the truest sense of the word.

She has been travelling and working outside of the United States for fifteen years now. She earns her living by teaching English, singing in hotels and bars, and busking on streets.

I am absolutely amazed by how many different ways there truly are for making money and travelling. Most of us might feel sketchy about this since travelling alone is already costly, but here you go, there are these people like my friend Brooke.

If you have a passion in anything, I bet you there is a way to make money from that passion. Don’t give up, as Brooke says. Figure it out. Work at it. Eventually, something will click.

Indeed, when there’s a will, there’s a way.
